ANU

University House Bar and Bistro and the Fellows Garden

THE PROJECT —

University House was constructed in the 1950s and was the first building to be established on the ANU campus. Its status as a building of substance and historical significance is recognised in its Heritage listing. University House mainly provides accommodation for visitors to the ANU campus, as well as dining and catering facilities that are open to the wider campus community. The building comprises a cellar, originally configured as a laundry but subsequently converted to a bar and bistro, ground floor mainly occupied by Boffins restaurant, and two accommodation levels. The above ground facilities have been regularly updated. The old cellar conversion did not work well as it was accommodated within the existing laundry layout. The lack of amenity provided by the cellar bistro limited patronage and resulted in the facility slipping slowly into disuse.
