Shaw Building Group has undertaken many projects at Parliament House and has recently been selected to replace the Emergency Warning and Intercommunication System (EWIS). The EWIS is an essential service for the building, providing integrated, system-wide monitoring and control of the building’s fire and emergency control system as well as supporting various field devices and security functions.

The project is technically complex with multiple levels of redundancy to ensure continuous operation in all circumstances. While the existing EWIS is functioning perfectly, it was installed when the building was first completed in 1988, and was upgraded in 2000. It has therefore reached the end of its operational life.

Jack Harris and his team – Richard Semmler, Terry Dwyer and Jonathan Luks recently scooped the pool with a second major Australian Institute of Building (AIB) award for Construction Excellence. Following their success at the ACT Award night on 1 May 2015 in which they picked up an award for Professional Excellence for their work on reconstructing the Mt Stromlo Director’s Residence, the team were awarded a Certificate of High Commendation for the same project at the AIB National awards held in Sydney on 26 September.

Judging for the National award considered the contribution of individuals and the challenges they faced during construction, rather than the characteristics of the completed structure.

In the words of the AIB Judging Panel: “These awards are the ultimate personal achievement for a professional builder. They recognise the contribution and leadership shown by individuals to the successful completion of a construction project, reinforcing the fact that the success of any firm can be attributed to those responsible for construction projects.”
