Carers Charity Bowls Day 2014

Thursday the 6th March 2014 saw our 9th year supporting Carers ACT and our Annual Bowls Day. With 180 in attendance and the rain clouds hovering overhead, the afternoon kicked off with 42 teams hitting the greens and the first jacks taking their positions on the rink the competition was on. The theme this year was the 60’s and the dress code varied from flower power to school boys. The Kennards Team were so competitive, they reverted to using a tape measure for the precise winning decision whilst competing with ACT Metropolitan.

After two hours of competition, intense concentration, socialising and networking, and a few more refreshments consumed it was back to the clubhouse for the serious side of the evening beginning with a speech from Jess and her mother describing how Carers ACT have helped her with her confidence and self esteem by enrolling her in a program in the Cafe run by Carers. They are teaching her the skills to make coffee and deal with customers, she was a very excited teenager who was looking forward to explaining what she does.

The CEO of Carers ACT Dee McGrath thanked everyone present and Shaw Building Group for their support over the last 9 years and without the support, these programmes like the Café would not have evolved.

We then commenced the Auction beginning with our smaller items of a 55’ TV and BBQ leading to our 10th item being a weekend in Melbourne for the 2015 Australian Open Tennis. Many thanks to our wonderful suppliers for their generous donations we raised over $10,000 .

Due to the wonderful support of all attended we have raised over $82,000 in total this year and look forward to continuing our support of carers in the Canberra region for years to come.

Thanks to all who contributed!
